KWF is an organization with an “Open Door Policy,” giving an arm of support to people in desperate need. Most often there’s urgency felt to reach us for emotional help, which is assuaged by our sharing knowledge from our experiences. The families are so overwhelmed by the magnitude of the disease that they are unable to state their financial requirement. We understand their dilemma which needs their priority attention and guide them with the right perspective.
Our prime objective is to persuade them to start the treatment at the earliest, in line with their nephrologists’ recommendation. Then, we attempt to understand the financial needs. This helps us establish the category in which to place their treatment cost and arrive at a feasible financial aid.
“Right to Survive” is a driving force. All our conversations revolve around this thought process.
KWF will receive Income Tax exemption only by mid 2021.
But our work has never reached a roadblock due to unavailability of funds. We seek financial assistance from families, friends and well-wishers to meet patients’ urgent fund requests. With some ‘start-up’ funds we boost people to plan treatment and find balanced financial resources. Medicines are given free to people in weaker economic classes during a festival. During the pandemic we have helped people who lost their employment by giving medicines at discounted rates. Free-dialysis is given to some people in memory of warriors who served KWF.
The Governing Body has derived a criterion to be applied for patients in dire need of financial aid. A team evaluates each case depending upon the patient’s age, economic status and family composition before taking any decision. Between April 2018 and March 2020 we spent over ₹10 lakhs.
The categories developed are:
- Fistula surgery: our contribution is 15% of surgery cost
- Acute Kidney Injury: saving lives of kids, so pick up a project towards this objective
- Medicine Subsidy: 15% done as a festival project
- Transplant Support: lump sum of ₹25,000
